Back in 2011, Drogheda was the subject of a 6 part television series called RTÉ Local Heroes. Under the supervision of Sen. Feargal Quinn and his team of mentors, Drogheda worked hard to plan a programme of economic regeneration and to build pride in local people about all that Drogheda had to offer.
That pride has continued to grow and grow and for the last two years a voluntary committee have worked as a team with the sole ambition of bringing Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann to Drogheda.
Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is the largest single celebration of Irish music, language, song and dance in the world. It takes place every August and over a fortnight it attracts in excess of 250,000 visitors. Last weekend, we aimed to give the people of Drogheda a “flavour of the Fleadh” by transforming Laurence Street into Fleadh Street. In particular local business people, An Garda Siochana, the Local Authority and volunteers demonstrated immense dedication as they pulled together to stage this brilliant event.
WhiteLight were thrilled to provide event planning, management and communications services to this event. It was heart-warming to see everyone enjoying the event and really getting into the mood. The boyant and vibrant community spirit was in evidence and the musicians and dancers (young and old) did the town proud.
The vote for the host town for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2015 takes place at the Cultúrlann of Comhaltas on Saturday 8th March when either Sligo, Ennis or Drogheda will be selected. Fingers crossed for Drogheda!
